The Dunya Files · Episode 2
What Happens in the Grave According to Islam?
The burial is over. The people begin to walk away. What do authentic Islamic sources actually say happens next?
The first moments after burial
Sahih al-Bukhari 1338 gives the documentary its central opening image: after the person is placed in the grave and the companions leave, the deceased hears their footsteps. The narration then moves immediately into questioning.
That is why the angle of the episode is not a speculative tour of the unseen. It begins with a specific moment established in an authentic narration and follows only what the source map supports.
The questioning
Authentic hadith describe questioning after burial and distinguish between the believer who is made firm and the person who cannot answer with certainty. Sahih al-Bukhari 1369 explicitly connects this scene with Qur'an 14:27: Allah makes the believers firm with the firm word in this life and the Hereafter.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4753 contains a longer narration describing the questions and the contrasting state that follows. The film uses this material carefully without inventing the appearance of the angels or claiming to show the scene literally.
Comfort, punishment and the state before resurrection
The source map also includes authentic reports establishing punishment in the grave and differing states after death. Sahih al-Bukhari 1377 records a supplication seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave, while Bukhari 1378 and Muslim 292a provide reports about people being punished.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1379 and Sahih Muslim 2866a state that the deceased is shown a place morning and evening until resurrection. Qur'an 40:46 is also relevant to the source map because it describes the people of Pharaoh being exposed to the Fire morning and evening before the Hour.
Barzakh: the barrier until resurrection
Qur'an 23:99–100 names the barrier after death and before resurrection. The documentary treats Barzakh as an unseen stage established by revelation, not as a setting that can be mapped, timed or visually reconstructed in detail.

What is the questioning in the grave?
Authentic narrations describe questioning after burial. Sahih al-Bukhari 1369 connects the believer being made firm during this questioning with Qur'an 14:27, while Sunan Abi Dawud 4753 gives a longer narration about the questions and the contrasting outcomes.

Yes. Authentic hadith establish both the reality of punishment in the grave and differing states after death. The documentary avoids adding folklore, invented timelines or visual details that the sources do not establish.
Does The Dunya Files literally depict the unseen?
No. The imagery is symbolic and cinematic. It is not presented as a literal depiction of Allah, Prophets, angels, the soul, Barzakh or the unseen realities of the grave.
The next stage
Barzakh is not forever. One day, that barrier ends. That is where the next stage begins.
